THE BLACK BOX
MAINSTAGE: Specialty Black Curtains + Lighting + Camera Technique
Tyler's Production Notes
Some years ago, I was challenged to create an "infinite dark room" look. I took a deep dive into what was possible with depth, darkness and separation of subject in small spaces.
I eventually came to this signature Black Box studio look, which we have used in everything from music video, to feature film, to PSA.
It's a three-part recipe:
1. High contrast lighting techniques leaning heavily on inverse square law. Bright sources are one thing - but proximity is the key. LED mattes hung from the grid have been an excellent solution.
2. Exposing our dual circuit cameras at the bottom of their ISO ranges (ISO 200 or 1250 for our Pocket 4k, 6k and Cinema 6k range), dragging shadows to their crunchiest and cleanest signal.
3. Custom Curtains I had made with IR Flock Sheet. IRFS is a specialty fabric that binds carbon to flocked pile, creating an impressively contained result. Sewn together by the tailors that shared our floor back on 36th street!
